"Big Guys" From Georgia—Donald, Vicky, Zulu
and Hazel

Donald
Born: 1973
The Boss! As the only fully adult
male, he is fully in charge! It is his duty to display whenever
there are strangers around that may threaten his troop,
or if some of his gang are getting uppity. These charging
displays involve a lot of racing around, hooting and clapping.
Donald can be gentle, too, and spends much of his time tickling
the kids or grooming with the older girls. |
Hazel
Born: 1972
Hazel is the matriarch of the group. When she arrived at
the PRC she was extremely obese, weighing over 200 lbs!
She was very lethargic, not doing much besides sleeping
and eating. Over the years she has lost weight and has become
increasingly active. She runs after the kids in games of
chase and climbs and swings as well as any of the others.

 Vicky
Born: 1974
Vicky can be very crabby and disagreeable to both chimps
and humans. This is understandable since she had such a
difficult life before coming to the PRC. She does have good
days, when she is friendly and playful and racing around
with the kids. She spends most of her time just resting
and grooming, though. |
 Zulu
Born: 1974
Since the adults and kids have lived together (summer, 2000)
Zulu has really taken a maternal attitude toward many of
the kids, especially Cory and Rodney. She hangs upside down
and tickles them with her feet and comforts them when they're
scared. Zulu and Donald are very close and she always backs
him up when he displays or disciplines a youngster.

The “Kids”—Cory, Ike, Jenny, Martina, Noelle, Pozna and Rodney
The youngest seven of the chimps arrived at the PRC in 1996 after the lab at which they were bred and housed finalized plans to shut down.

Martina
Born:
January 21, 1991
She's the oldest of the kids and, because of this, somewhat
of a bully. She takes treats and toys from the younger guys
and they won't even try to stop her! She is also a drama
queen, screaming and crying at the slightest injustice!

Ike
Born:
June 6, 1994
Next to Donald, he's the oldest male. Because of this, he
is a constant target of Donald's dominance displays. Ike
never does anything to antagonize Donald, but because he
is "next in line" age and size-wise, he is perceived as
a threat. Ike loves to play chase and spends much of his
time with his good buddy, Noelle |
Rodney
Born:
November 25, 1994
A very silly fellow! He always is trying to get his friends
to play, usually by punching or throwing things at them.
He isn't usually being mean, he just plays very rough and
never knows when to stop. Even though he is much more obnoxious
and rambunctious than Ike, Donald is more tolerant because
Rodney is younger. Rodney is fascinated by belly buttons.

Noelle
Born: December
22, 1994
One of our more unpredictable individuals! She can be a
helpful little angel, or the most malicious of the bunch:
spitting and jabbing relentlessly. When she gets angry she
stomps her feet, hair on end, swaggering about. She has
a crush on Ike, and cries when she can't be near him. Noelle
loves shoes and boots. She does sometimes wear them, but
mostly she carries them about and uses them to entice her
friends to play.

Pozna
Born: August 10,1995
The youngest of the bunch! She is usually a very sweet little
girl, except when you go to close the Playroom at night!
Then she is very naughty and disobedient, refusing to leave
and spitting on your head! Otherwise, she likes to be helpful,
handing back trash and even wiping windows when asked! Pozna
loves to make big, comfortable nests of straw. She even
pulls the straw around her like a blanket.

Jenny
Born: May 19, 1995
Jenny loves to be naughty - especially if it gets her attention!
She is always playing, either wrestling with her buddies
or just having a great time running around alone with a
shoe on her head! Jenny loves to mix things together. She
will fill a container with water, mix in juice and mash
in fruits and veggies, shake the whole concoction and finally
taste it. |

Cory
Born: April 26, 1995
Usually very friendly, he will try to elicit attention from
everyone by banging the cage and making “raspberry” sounds
with his lips. He also imitates Donald’s displays with ones
of his own, stomping and dragging around toys. Because he
is so small, the adults see him as a baby and treat him
as such. He gets away with anything from antagonizing Donald
to stealing food from Zulu! He is also very diplomatic and
tries to end disputes whenever he can by racing in the midst
of a disagreement and hugging both individuals involved.
This often works to calm everyone down. |
